The MICAH Program – Q4 2025 Newsletter

As we close out 2025, one reality stands out: the need for fair, compassionate lending in our community continues to grow.

Inflation, disruptions to SNAP and Medicaid benefits, and employment uncertainty have placed significant pressure on many neighbors living paycheck to paycheck. In response, the demand for help through the MICAH Program has increased dramatically.

In 2025, we received more than twice the number of loan inquiries compared to 2024, and the number of loans made nearly tripled. Each loan represents a neighbor working to stay afloat, avoid financial collapse, and move forward with dignity.

The Reality of Predatory Lending

Many neighbors come to us already trapped in extremely high-cost loans. Recent examples include:

  • $1,417.50 loan at 304% APR, resulting in over $3,200 in finance charges
  • $3,000 loan at 242% APR, with more than $8,300 in finance charges

These practices are not rare. Recently, I personally received an email advertising a “quick and easy” loan of up to $2,500. On closer review, the lender disclosed interest rates ranging from 261% to 1,304% APR, depending on the loan amount and term.

We are also seeing increased harm from buy-here/pay-here auto loans, where neighbors are often sold overpriced, high-mileage vehicles with steep interest rates, costly add-ons, and tracking or kill-switch devices that make repossession easy.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are entering 2026 in a strong financial position and prepared for continued demand. Your support is truly life-changing.

We are equally grateful for our volunteers—our Board members, Loan Review Panel, and Mentors—who give their time, wisdom, and compassion to make this work possible. We are also thankful for our community partners, including Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Mason & Sons Auto Repair, and many local nonprofits.
